Project Description

Under the Sulawesi Economic Development Strategy (SEDS) project the Humber Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning aims to strengthen the skills of 7 Sulawesi universities to design and deliver entrepreneurship education that produces graduates able to start their own businesses. This project will benefit 1 000 entrepreneurs and seeks to develop support services for small and medium enterprises through the creation of networks.

Expected Results

The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: I1)improved quality and responsiveness of Sulawesi universities’ entrepreneurship programming and business support services that promote the development and growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in a manner that is gender equitable and environmentally sustainable and 2)increased integration and knowledge sharing among SMEs university partners local and regional governments chambers of commerce industry association and financial institutions in Sulawesi.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved at the end of the project in December 2017 include: (1) quality and responsiveness of Sulawesi universities’ entrepreneurship programming and business support services have been improved. All seven university partners have developed and launched new applied entrepreneurship curriculum and the project has trained 429 lecturers in the delivery of that curriculum. Business Support Centres are operational on the campuses of all the Sulawesi Economic Development Strategy (SEDS) partner universities and are providing support to young entrepreneurs. 97% of students are able to demonstrate an understanding of the cross cutting themes of gender governance and sustainability; (2) integration and knowledge sharing among small and medium sized enterprises university partners local and regional governments chambers of commerce industry association and financial institutions in Sulawesi have been increased: 32% of SEDS students are accessing services through the Business Support Centres (BSC).; (3) the services provided through the BSC increase the impact and sustainability of other programs to support entrepreneurs such as those offered through the Ministry of Education and Directorate of Higher Education. The BSCs have partnerships with key retail environments and marketing associations which can increase access for students; and (4) the SEDS project has established formal networks among SME stakeholders that are now funded by private sector actors. Those achievements led to the improvement of sustainable management and growth of SMEs in North and South in Sulawesi that are generating greater employment higher levels of income and reduced poverty among women and men.
