Project Description

The goal of the project is to allow thousand of women and men to improve their livelihoods and their capacities for takeover through sustainable economic growth in Bolivia Peru and Vietnam. The project aims to strengthen cooperatives mutuals and other associations in order to improve their economic organizational and governance performance. The project aims to help cooperatives and mutuals generate more economic activity through more effective organizations thereby achieving greater profitability and providing better services to their members and to the general public. The project also aims to help cooperatives and mutuals become more influential within civil society and with government to have a more significant impact on their community.

Expected Results

The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: (1) prosperous and sustainable cooperatives mutual associations and other associations serving their members; and (2) favourable framework and improved business environment for the development of businesses in the cooperative sector.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2017) include the following: (1) the number of women in positions of responsibility rose from 65 to 126 exceeding the end-of-project target of 88; (2) the number of cooperative members rose from 43 032 to 144 673 while the ultimate goal was 87 472 members; (3) on average the sales of supported cooperatives increased by 30.4% while the final target was an increase of 20%; (4) in Peru three proposals documents and strategic positions that include gender equality and environment components—the national cooperative development plan the virtual cooperative directory and the proposed amendments to the current legislation on cooperatives—were presented to the government and other players in the cooperative sector surpassing the ultimate goal and achieving 150% of the target; (5) in Bolivia in terms of women’s involvement in positions of responsibility 77 women were elected to positions of responsibility whereas the final target was 54; (6) in Vietnam the majority of the supported cooperatives averaged a 32% increase in their sales while the end-of-project goal was an increase of 20%. These results contributed to prosperous and sustainable cooperatives mutual associations and other associations that serve their members (women and men) as well as to a favourable framework and improved business environment for the development of businesses in the cooperative sector.
