Project Description
The project contributes to the reconstruction of the Haitian health system through the development of a critical mass of human resources with the necessary skills knowledge and practical experience to adequately respond to the country’s needs in terms of maternal and perinatal health. It aims to strengthen the clinical capacity building of health professionals including graduates interns and residents in obstetrics and gynaecology as well as current practitioners to provide maternal and neonatal care that meets international standards with a view to decrease mortality and maternal and neonatal morbidity in Haiti. Some project activities include: (i) producing and disseminating clinical guidelines on the management of obstetric and neonatal complications; (ii) strengthening the capacity of four universities (State University of Haiti Notre Dame Quisqueya and Lumière) to offer internship placements; and (iii) training 360 graduates interns and residents as well as 160 current health practitioners in emergency obstetric and neonatal care.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2013) include: Five clinical guidelines for the management of obstetric and neonatal complications have been developed or updated approved by the Ministry of Health and disseminated to the four universities and to other health care facilities across the country in order to improve the quality of care for obstetric and neonatal complications. This component of the project has strengthened the technical capacity of nine professionals including five representatives of the Ministry of Health who are now in a better position to facilitate the production revision and approval of clinical guidelines in order to guide the obstetric practice in Haiti. The project also contributed to the development of the emergency obstetric course ALARM - Haiti (Advances in Labour and Risk Management – Haiti) adapted to the Haitian context and integrating the revised guidelines. Thirty professors of obstetrics benefitted from workshops on new teaching methods and created four teaching modules focusing on the new clinical guidelines and integrating interactive teaching principles. Almost 500 medical students (331 graduates 86 internal 81 residents) and a critical mass of resources in four university hospitals (148 health care professionals representing more than 90% of professionals working in the maternity of these hospitals) updated their knowledge and expertise in emergency obstetrics. In addition the project strengthened the Haitian Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (SHOG) leadership. Nineteen new ALARM instructors have been trained allowing the SHOG to provide regular training opportunities to health professionals.
