Project Description
World Vision Canada takes an integrated coordinated approach with the Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training and the communities of Croix-de-Bouquet and Tabarre to the recovery and rehabilitation of 100 schools in these two communities. The project aims to combine both internal and external rehabilitation of schools including water sanitation and hygiene facilities such as latrines school feeding programs and disaster risk reduction (DRR) programs to improve education health and safety of children in the targeted areas.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2013) include: nine schools were reconstructed and rehabilitated benefitting 3 036 students; new school furniture and supplies such as desks chairs cabinets blackboards and backpacks were provided for 10 476 students; 271 teachers participated in training sessions on lesson planning and classroom management; 954 teachers were trained in disaster risk reduction programs which improved their ability to teach disaster preparedness ; 60 schools received manuals for the disaster risk reduction training module first aid kits megaphones earthquake alarms and other emergency response tools; and schools have also conducted evacuation drills and created risk maps. Vegetable gardens were built in 39 schools thereby increasing access to diverse food sources complementing school feeding programs for children. New or improved water sanitation and hygiene facilities benefitted 6 707 students and 143 teachers. A “Clean School” campaign was conducted in 23 schools in order to promote a culture of health and cleanliness. The program ended with the installation of recycling centres in each commune serving the schools and the community. These results contributed to a safer and healthier education environment for a total of 69 644 students and 100 schools increased ability of 271 Haitian teachers to teach government curriculum and increased use of government supported disaster preparedness techniques.
