Project Description
The project aims to rehabilitate and/or reconstruct four schools and a health centre for 163 760 beneficiaries in the following departments: west (Pétionville Carrefour) Nippes (Miragoâne La Brousse et Savane Henry) north-east (Terrier-Rouge) south-east (Jacmel Valley) and west Nippes and south-east (Jacmel Ganthier Léogane Labrousse). These are the zones that are the most affected by the earthquake. The project also aims to increase the capacity of the targeted communities to welcome more people so that the affected populations have access to satisfying education and health services. The second component of the project aims to bring potable water to affected populations. Terre Sans Frontières is working in partnership with the Frères de l'instruction chrétienne - Haïti Soeurs de la Charité de St-Louis the Soeurs Notre-Dame du Sacré Coeur the Institut Technique Libre Fondation pour le Développement Économique et Social and the Commission épiscopale pour l'éducation catholique - Haïti.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved at the end of the project (September 2013): 1) The education component was instrumental in completing construction work in four schools (Carrefour La Vallée de Jacmel Terrier-Rouge and Miragoâne) including: i) restoring or building 19 classrooms and eight vocational training workshops; and ii) distributing educational material computer equipment furniture tools and building supplies. About 800 elementary school students (including 380 girls) now benefit from improved learning environments and at least 372 young adults (including 144 young women) were able to complete vocational training to become electricians masons plumbers computer administrators or agricultural technicians. 2) The health component was instrumental in: i) building eight additional consultation rooms for Pétion-Ville’s health center with a daily capacity of 60 patients; ii) transforming an ancient building into a laboratory including the provision of medical and administrative equipment; iii) distributing medical equipment that work on independent energy supplies (i.e. generators) water treatment systems and laboratory supplies for Labrousse’s health center. 3) The water component was instrumental in: i) rehabilitating two water aqueducts in Savanne-Henry and Labrousse and building a third one in Labrousse improving access to quality water for 8 250 individuals; ii) boring seven water wells providing quality water to 5 500 beneficiaries making and distributing 800 water filters to improve water quality for 33 000 individuals and repairing 102 manual water pumps for the benefit of 50 000 individuals; iii) training in rural hydraulics and manual water pump repair was provided to 24 individuals (including nine women) which resulted in the creation of three water filter fabrication micro-businesses as well as a well pump repair micro-business.
