Project Description
The Disabled Peoples' International (DPI) project aims to positively influence the lives of people with disabilities in developing countries more specifically in five CIDA Countries of Focus that have ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD): Tanzania Bangladesh Peru the Caribbean (Jamaica) and Ukraine. The project's objectives include: 1) strengthening the national and international dialogue on policy legal institutional social and economical issues that affect people with disabilities; and 2) strengthening the capacity of DPI members to promote awareness and enforcement of the CRPD and to use the reporting requirements under the CRPD to promote the rights of people with disabilities. The project helps to increase awareness protection and enforcement of the rights of people with disabilities and enhance their inclusion and access to services.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (July 2013) include: (i) empowering Disabled Peoples’ International Members of National Assemblies (MNA) that have ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities to monitor the implementation of the Convention; (ii) assisting MNAs to develop strategies and action plans for the effective implementation of the Convention; (iii) creating national networks to collect evidence on the violation of human rights of people with disabilities; (iv) improving the ability of Disabled People’ International organizations to monitor the implementation of the Convention in their respective communities; (v) strengthening the relationship between project partners and the Ombudsperson and National Human Rights Commission in their countries to better promote the human rights and fundamental freedoms of people with disabilities; (vi) establishing two Women’s Global Networks to promote the rights of women with disabilities particularly young women with disabilities; and (vii) setting up a network for Youth with Disabilities to strengthen the voices of youth with disabilities. These results contributed to improving the lives of people with disabilities by ensuring the effective implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
