Project Description
This initiative aims to improve the quality of life of impoverished children and youth aged 5 to 24. The project is providing basic education agricultural information technology and life skills training that includes HIV/AIDS awareness. It is also providing children and youth with post-conflict psychosocial counseling employment opportunities job finding services and development-oriented sports programs. All these programs and services are being delivered by a collaborative network formed by community-based organizations (CBOs) such as Kids Action Sierra Leone the Association for Children in Need (ACN) and Kids Involved in Dynamic Sports (KIDS). This project also seeks to motivate partner organizations and beneficiaries to promote gender equality. As a result at least 50% of the beneficiaries are girls and young women. In addition extensive campaigns are being carried out to sensitize communities about the importance and advantages of giving women equal access to basic education and technical and vocational training.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (August 2013) include: (i) delivering skills training sports activities education and social and employment counseling to 2 100 youth (50% female) who have become productive members of communities; (ii) increasing the income-generating capacity of local partner organizations for the financial sustainability of their operations; (iii) establishing collaboration among local partner organizations local government and businesses to coordinate services such as psychosocial counseling and job search assistance for youth; and (iv) integrating gender issues into organizational practices including active encouragement and support for girls’ participation. These results are contributing to reducing poverty and lessening the marginalization of young women and men in Sierra Leone.
