Project Description
The project enhances municipal environmental management practices and the quality of life of the communities in the coastal zone of south-east Cuba. The university partners are contributing to national policy and practices on implementation of local integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) through their enhanced capacity to deliver gender-equitable ICZM education and training activities especially in rural areas. Municipal governments are undertaking ICZM to resolve local coastal and environmental problems based on integrated management strategies. Education and training in ICZM and environmental management is also being provided at the local level in order to ensure the involvement of women and youth participants.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (April 30 2015) include: (i) training ten municipal government officials in San Antonio del Sur and ten in Guáma on local integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) climate resilience and environmental management; (ii) increasing the numbers of women and youth enrolled in ICZM and environmental education/training courses; (iii) training 28 women and 30 men from the Universidad de Oriente and the Universidad de Guantánamo on ICZM in coastal zone management climate resilience environmental management etc; (iv) training 14 women and 14 men to teach marine biology; (v) completing eight multimedia training modules for government officials modules on ICZM coastal systems and marine biodiversity land-use planning climate vulnerability and risk assessment and management renewable energy environmental management for businesses environmental education sustainable tourism and eco-agriculture; (vi) delivering 16 training modules in Guamá and San Antonio del Sur for 205 women and 200 men; (vii) completing a variety of publications on ICZM: a book on ICZM in Cuba 38 articles one master thesis two doctoral thesis 19 mini-theses and 42 papers and posters presented at CARICOSTAS; and (viii) establishing an ICZM network for Southeast Cuba based at the Universidad de Oriente. The Project produced a widespread understanding of the importance of ICZM to anticipate and respond to the impacts of climate change in the development of local coastal areas at the municipal government level. The ultimate output was two professionally completed TV documentaries addressing the challenges of climate change impacts on the coastal zones of Guamá and SAS and the fragility of their different types of coastal ecosystems in Cuba. The documentaries were also an opportunity to the work of the Project on a national scale.
