Project Description

This project supports the organization of the CIVICUS World Assemblies and Youth Assemblies in Montreal that were held in 2010 2011 and 2012. Each World Assembly attracts up to one thousand participants from approximately one hundred countries. The participants are primarily from civil society but also from the private sector and from government. The World Assemblies aim to build the capacity of civil society in Canada and internationally to effectively reduce poverty. Their priority themes are the economy aid effectiveness and the environment. A Youth Assembly precedes each World Assembly. The Youth Assembly provides about one hundred youth delegates with the opportunity to build knowledge and skills relating to key themes that they can use in the upcoming World Assembly. Since 1995 CIVICUS has held eight World Assemblies in various cities around the world. The first Youth Assembly took place in 2007.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of September 2012 include: CIVICUS World Assemblies and Youth Assemblies were held in Montreal in 2010 2011 and 2012. They attracted almost 1 000 representatives each year from over 100 countries representing civil society the private sector and government. Over 50 workshops round tables and interactive sessions were held at the World Assemblies. Participants confirmed that they found the World Assembly meetings stimulated innovation networking and learning which they expect will lead in turn to greater collaboration among civil society actors on the design and delivery of international development programs as well as to more effective programming and less duplication of effort.
