Project Description

This project aims to strengthen the capacity of pediatric eye care services in the central largely rural region of Vietnam. Project activities include the establishment of a fully-equipped child-friendly pediatric eye care clinic the establishment of a pediatric outreach and referral network throughout Thua Thien-Hue province and in six neighbouring provinces the diagnosis of problems related to eye care the increase of parents' knowledge regarding their children's eye care and a better access to eye care services for these communities. The project also seeks to increase understanding among Canadians of the factors influencing sustainable pediatric eye care. CIDA's contribution includes funds set aside for the evaluation of the project.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (July 2013) include: (i) building a Child-Friendly Eye Care Center at Hue Eye Hospital that complies with all the infrastructure requirements of a high-standard pediatric eye care facility; (ii) setting up a well-trained pediatric eye care team that provides quality eye care to children in need at Hue Eye Hospital; (iii) providing retinopathy of prematurity screening and treatment at Hue Central Hospital; (iv) examining 13 330 children providing medical treatment to 9 439 children and providing prescriptions for glasses to 5 470 children at schools; (v) performing 350 eye surgeries; (vi) developing an outreach and referral network to reach patients in need in the central region of Vietnam; (vii) developing a long-term business strategy for Hue Eye Hospital to ensure the long-term ability of the pediatric unit to meet the growing demand of patients across the central region of Vietnam; and (viii) engaging the Canadian public with over 3 000 people visiting the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital visitors. These results contributed to improving children’s access to high quality pediatric eye care services in the central region of Vietnam.
