Project Description

This project aims to provide a source of potable water for up to 20 000 children women and men and strengthen the capacity of local committees to manage this facility. Women and children are the main beneficiaries of this water project. The project comprises three inter-related components: (1) providing access to a permanent source of potable water including a pump and water distribution system to four watering points in the settlement of Ceegaag; (2) developing the capacity of local people and institutions to manage and sustain this system through the creation of a water management committee and a tribal elders committee responsible for the operation of the water system; and (3) delivering an educational program to engage local inhabitants on basic sanitation the safe use of water and the proper use and maintenance of the water system. The local partners for this project are; Candle Light Health Education and Environment Hargiesa Somaliland and Hawd Education and Rural Development Organization (HERDO) Somaliland is located in northern Somalia.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of June 2013 include: (1) a water management committee has been formed and members (four women and five men) have received final training on water access; (2) this water management committee has initiated community discussions completed a strategic plan for sustaining the water project and developed a policy covering the fair distribution of water (the committee and traditional leaders have agreed to work together to ensure water access and distribution); (3) a 350-meter deep well was built and local partners and the Ceegaag community are finalizing the necessary equipment for the well to start producing water; and (4) training and workshops related to sanitation and hygiene were delivered to members of the Ceegaag village . These results have contributed to improved capacity of the village of Ceegaag to manage and sustain a safe water supply as well as to improved knowledge of the local population on safe water use and sanitation.
