Project Description
The North-South Institute's program focuses on five research priorities: (a) finance for equitable growth; (b) peace-building and conflict prevention; (c) trade and natural resources; (d) employment and migration; and (e) governance reform and effective development. The program builds on the Institute's experience related to good governance supporting private sector development and improving health. At the same time it aims to add new themes in the areas of environmental sustainability (financing climate adaptation) securing access to natural resources (food fuel) and the contribution of migrant workers. The North-South Institute conducts research designed to inform policy stimulate public dialogue and support efforts to reduce poverty and inequality. Its research is aimed at increasing effectiveness strengthening global governance and accountability contributing to the prevention of conflicts promoting equitable trade and commercial relations improving the impact of international financial systems and institutions on poor countries and people and enhancing gender equality.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved by North South Institute through the support of CIDA and other international donors as of September 2012 include: (i) hosting the “Future of Multilateral Development Cooperation” conference in Ottawa (June 2011)—bringing together key stakeholders in international development to determine how they can better serve the poor in the context of an evolving global order; (2) capturing a statistical analysis of Canadian contributions to multilateral institutions in the 2011 Canadian Development Report; (iii) setting up two initiatives (Natural Resources Charter led by Paul Collier and Tony Venables with Revenue Watch and the African Mining Vision led by the African Union) to establish global norms and regulations for the use of natural resources; (iv) elaborating the concept of a global Financial Transaction Tax for the G20 meeting in Cannes which was shared with key decision makers and formed part of the global discussion around macroeconomic stability following the global economic crisis; and (v) launching the Canadian International Development Platform in consultation with CIDA and the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade a one-stop interactive source for essential information and analysis on Canada’s relations with developing nations (http://cidpnsi.ca/).
