Project Description

The program is helping to enhance the capacity of partner organizations in delivering quality basic education and life skills programs to marginalized youth in seven communities. Activities include the professional development of primary teachers in how to teach literacy youth life skills programs as a prerequisite to vocational training recreational and cultural activities for youth and skills training for parents. Also Jamaican Self-Help (JSH) organizes Canadian youth leadership tours to Jamaica that contribute to program achievements. Educational tours of Jamaican youth in Canada develop their leadership skills. The presence of Jamaican youth in Canada also enhances the awareness of development issues in education among the Canadian public.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2013) include: (i) 1 918 Jamaican children and youth improved their levels of education and employment-related skills; (ii) 85% of participating schools had better rates of literacy among their students; (iii) 4 465 Jamaican children and youth improved their inter-personal and life skills such as leadership and self-confidence; (iv) 5 257 parents improved their ability to support their children to attend school for example; (v) three Jamaican schools and four community centres are able to manage their own children and youth programs; (vi) training was provided to improve the skills of 39 teachers and 14 partner leaders. These results have contributed to participating schools and community centres reporting marked decreases in aggressive behaviour among their students and youth participants and increased pride in reading and academic achievements. 11 409 Jamaican children youth and parents benefitted directly from the project.
