Project Description
This grant supports CIVICUS in implementing programs and achieving results based on its new strategic directions: (1) protecting the rights of civil society actors; (2) strengthening good practice within civil society; and (3) strengthening civil society's ability to influence the policies and practices of governments international institutions and the private sector. The overall goal is to support the right of citizens to organize to strengthen civil society organizations and to foster better terms of engagement between civil society and governments the private sector and international institutions. To achieve this goal CIVICUS implements seven programs with CIDA support: (a) the Civil Society Index; (b) the Civil Society Watch; (c) participatory governance; (d) legitimacy transparency and accountability; (e) development cooperation and aid effectiveness; (f) the Affinity Group of National Associations Secretariat; and (g) the CIVICUS World Assembly. The CIVICUS programs are implemented around the world in partnership with other organizations. In all its work CIVICUS promotes knowledge generation and analysis communication multi-stakeholder engagement and advocacy. The partners and chief beneficiaries of its programs are civil society organizations activists networks and associations operating at local national and international levels.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results as of the end of the project (December 2011) include: All the objectives were achieved including: (i) the creation of a civil society index and its adoption as a reference tool in all participating countries; (ii) the organization of active civil-society watch project teams in the participating countries now reporting to CIVICUS on commitments made by their respective governments and civil-society and private-sector entities; promoting participatory governance development cooperation and aid effectiveness; and monitoring legitimacy transparency and accountability practices; and (iii) the creation of strong links to and among local national association affinity groups organized by and reporting to a central Secretariat created for this purpose within CIVICUS.
