Project Description
The “Sustainability through Participation Empowerment and Decentralization” (SPED) program supports 27 regionally based NGO partners in 12 States of India to implement approximately 3 000 village-level socio-economic development initiatives in 540 villages reaching over 400 000 individuals. These initiatives target the most marginalized populations including (but not limited to) the poor women minorities and members of the lowest social castes. The program trains Community Facilitation Teams (CFTs) as they in turn train local communities to form Village Actions Teams (VATs) and undertake initiatives aimed at poverty alleviation. Areas of poverty reduction initiatives include off farm livelihoods agriculture watershed management and irrigation basic and non-formal education health and hygiene promotion gender mainstreaming environment protection and human rights advocacy.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2016) include: More than 549 578 poor and marginalized women men and children benefited from the implementation of 1 680 community micro-projects. These micro-projects have improved access to basic services and resources by providing: (1) latrines for 7 279 people; (2) drinking water for 141 387 people; (3) training to raise awareness about the importance of good hygiene for 138 732 people; (4) improvements to waste disposal systems for 76 154 people; (5) vocational training for 82 482 people; (6) literacy training for 14 989 people; (7) gender-equality awareness training for 119 826 people; (8) minority rights awareness training for 20 050 people; (9) the provision of tools material and equipment for income-generating activities for 47 773 people; (10) resources for home gardening for 95 646 people; (11) resources for organic agriculture for 61 075 people; (12) access to educational resources for 68 741 children; (13) access to literacy training for 14 989 adults; (14) access to medical care camps for 89 664 people; and (15) 257 691 trees planted.
