Project Description
This volunteer sending program is designed to send 636 volunteers to 13 developing countries. It aims to: (1) enable partners to provide women and men with the capacity to exercise their economic rights and to reduce their vulnerability to change; (2) enable civil society to establish effective dialogues with the government to identify policies and strategies that benefit vulnerable populations regarding the issues linked to essential health education and drinking water services; (3) enable partners to strengthen women’s leadership and increase their capacity to influence to identify strategies that eliminate all forms of violence and discrimination towards them to ensure the defence and the promotion of their rights and to involve men in this regard; and (4) enable partners to better defend youth issues in local policies to promote access to essential education and health services for youth and make youth stakeholders in society. As of the final year of the program in April 2014 programming will extend to Colombia and Mali in the form of a regional approach. An amount of $80 622 has been added to the total amount for each of the Volunteer Cooperation Agency programs for CIDA-led program evaluations.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2015) include: (1) the strengthened capacity of some 238 associations foundations and civil society organizations in 18 foreign countries and 88 organizations in Quebec has enabled thousands of young Canadians to contribute to international development; (2) foreign organizations have been supported by 797 volunteers including 708 Canadians (60% women) and 89 local volunteers. These individuals have put their knowledge and skills at the service of partners and have contributed to the outreach of Canadian cooperation; (3) 83% of foreign organizations have reported an improvement in their organizational management capacity program execution networking and knowledge sharing through over 2 350 training and coaching sessions given by volunteers reaching more than 46 000 people on financial management strategic planning and results-based management. Other support has been given on specific themes such as value chains commercialization management of revenue-generating activities developing business plans adapting to climate change or farm management; (4) on the program as a whole 53.8% of people claiming to have improved their skills and knowledge through these sessions were women; (5) 70% of organizations reported an improvement in their capacity to incorporate gender equality into their organization and programming; (6) 83% of partner organizations reported improved performance in program execution plausibly attributable to the volunteer support; (7) in Canada campaigns to engage and mobilize Canadians have alerted 1 917 032 Canadians to the search for concrete solutions to issues of injustice and poverty.
