Project Description
The Uniterra international voluntary program aims to contribute to poverty reduction and sustainable development through national and regional sectoral approaches in 13 developing countries with the support of 2 500 volunteers. The Uniterra program focuses on strengthening the capacity of 225 key organizations that work in private sector development governance health and education. More specifically the program focuses on improving access to health and education services markets and political participation; fostering equality between women and men; engaging organizations in political dialogue in specific sectoral issues; and raising awareness among Canadians of national regional and global issues with regards to private sector development governance health education and equality between women and men. The Uniterra program is jointly operated by the Centre for International Studies and Cooperation (CECI) and World University Services of Canada (WUSC).
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2013 include: 1 710 volunteers including 1 078 women (63%) who worked on various mandates of two weeks to 18 months providing 168 000 person-days and strengthening the capacities of 125 partner organizations in 13 countries. This represents 763 person-year of volunteer work. Volunteers included 608 long term volunteers (38%) 393 interns (24%) 269 on solidarity leave (17%) and 342 volunteers from the South (21%). The skills of 200 000 people including 120 000 women (60%) were strengthened and 10 000 management and programming tools were developed with partners. Partners and volunteers expressed a level of satisfaction superior to 90% when asked about their participation in the program and volunteer contributions. It is estimated that Uniterra supported partner activities had an impact on more than one million people including 620 000 women. A few examples of this impact include: In Burkina Faso 800 female rice steaming cabinet attendants and 2000 female Shea producers saw their income more than double over a few years. In Ghana school registration rates for girls increased under the “Girls’ Club” strategy which promotes the importance of education. Girls are making more efforts to stay in school or to integrate vocational training programs. In Malawi palliative care for HIV and Aids patients has improved. In Burkina Faso the disease rate was brought down by 1.2% following prevention campaigns organized by the State and civil society. In Peru greater participation from citizens in municipal water management businesses has been noted. In Mali the dialogue between civil society and the government led to the development of a social economic and solidarity policy.
