Project Description
This program aims to improve the health safety and financial security of developing-country youth particularly young women and to prevent the marginalization of children and youth by facilitating their participation in civil society. It also creates opportunities for Canadians particularly YMCA members to learn about participate in and support international development activities. The program has three integrated components: (1) overseas development projects; (2) Canadian public engagement; and (3) youth exchanges focused on skills development and international knowledge-sharing.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (December 2013) include: (1) 13 583 overseas youth gained employment skills and the tools to operate their own businesses; (2) 190 379 youth in Africa and the Americas were given information through awareness and education campaigns on HIV/AIDS; (3) 19 688 youth participated in leadership training sessions; (4) 51 814 youth peer educators were trained (and will continue to reach other youth in communities in Africa and the Americas beyond the duration of the program); and (5) 24 322 people including children youth and their families received counselling to promote family integration. In total 468 688 youth children women and men benefited directly from YMCA program activities. These results contributed to providing opportunities for youth to increase their knowledge and learn new skills to help them increase their incomes and self-sufficiency. The long-term results of these activities include an increase in employment prospects leadership skills and self-esteem for beneficiaries.
