Project Description

The goal of this program is to enable African radio organizations and practitioners to make an effective sustained contribution to the efforts of resource-poor farming families to improve their livelihood. The program aims to build the skills knowledge and capacity of radio organizations and radio practitioners for ongoing production and broadcast of high-quality effective locally relevant farm radio programmes. It also seeks to strengthen the role of farm radio in promoting gender equality in sub-Saharan Africa. The program provides 375 radio practitioners with two script packages per year totalling at least 12 informational resources over three years. It also supports the delivery of three annual script writing competitions and 800 person-days of custom training to 120 practitioners through workshops.

Progress & Results Achieved

The results achieved at the end of the project (November 2012) include: 1. Improved quality quantity relevance and reliability of farm radio programming content of 398 community radio organizations in 38 countries of sub-Saharan Africa. 2. Better skills knowledge and capacity of radio organizations and radio practitioners for ongoing production and broadcast of high-quality effective locally relevant farm radio programmes through nearly 700 hours of professional coaching/mentoring to a total of 286 radio practitioners (27% women) in 29 countries across sub-Saharan Africa. 3. 3000 person days of training delivered to 405 radio practitioners (32% women) from 27 African countries through 5 on-line training courses and 3 unique face to face workshops. 4. Increased collaboration among African community radio practitioners linking existing partners with new ones in Mali Tanzania Ethiopia Ghana Uganda Burkina Faso Malawi and Cameroon. 5. Strengthened role of farm radio in promoting gender equality in sub-Saharan Africa. Women accounted for 30% of the 405 radio practitioners trained through online and face to face workshops delivered during the Program. 6. Increase use of Canadian know-how to disseminate information knowledge and foment strengthened networks to overcome hunger and poverty in sub-Saharan Africa.
