Project Description

The project aims to strengthen the Technical Entrepreneurial Vocational Education and Training system partners through capacity building in planning management program renewal technical teacher training and applied research. It also re-designs programs to ensure relevancy address issues of access and success and prepare technical teachers to train students for employment and self-employment. The project supports the Government of Malawi’s goals of poverty reduction and socio-economic development through appropriate technical vocational policy and programming initiatives. In collaboration with the University of Regina the Malawi Polytechnic seeks to restructure its curriculum to make it more relevant to the nation’s labour market needs and to produce qualified technical teachers and graduates who can contribute to Malawi’s socio-economic development.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (August 2014) include: (1) a new strategic plan for the Malawi Polytechnic was developed implemented and continues to be monitored; (2) community outreach programs supported girls in primary education to stay in school and increased the knowledge and skills of boys and girls through educational programs relating to HIV/AIDS gender equality and human rights; (3) HIV and AIDS programming at the Polytechnic was strengthened through teacher training and the provision of teaching resources (103 faculty members trained including 30 women); and (4) four new programs were established within the University of Malawi Polytechnic’s Technical Education Department including two new undergraduate programs a new graduate program – Masters in Technical and Vocational Education – and a print-based distance education ‘‘Certificate in Education’’ program. These results have contributed to strengthening the technical and vocational education and training system in Malawi. These results are also helping to improve the ability of the educational and training system and build sustainable economic growth.
