Project Description
The project aims to improve environmental sustainability through organic farming practices and to improve the quality of life of families of landless small producers living in Brazil’s poorest areas. It is designed to strengthen the knowledge and capacities related to organic farming (use of fertilizers composting seed improvement crop rotation drip irrigation silage) of 450 families of landless farmers in the states of Bahia Ceara Pernambuco and Rio Grande do Sul. The project offers training in management of agricultural initiatives project management and conflict resolution. It also supports networking with organic farmers in other states and helps to improve the premises of two agricultural training centres. This is one of two components of a project valued at $389 844. The first part has been completed.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results as of May 2011 include: families know the basics and apply organic agricultural practices; families have developed knowledge and skills in marketing; a peanut production cooperative has been created in Ceara; families’ food production and food security are improving; and families' incomes are increasing.
