Strengthening Capacity for Justice - Program 2009-2013

Results achieved by the end of the program include: In the Zambian region of Mumbwa 51% of gender based violence cases are now being reported to the police; in Bolivia and Colombia 483 local and national leaders from 144 organizations were trained in organizational participatory management and socio-political processes of democratization; in the Philippines the project helped to increase the capacity of 400 churches whose members are now better equipped to promote human rights and the protection of the environment; in South Africa in the community of Citrusdal 1 000 farm workers are more confident and equipped to engage farm owners on issues of workers’ rights and decent wages; in the Indian districts of Aurangabad and Bidar 133 families have improved the sustainability of their farming livelihoods through the introduction and practice of organic farming aided by the establishment of 12 new traditional seed banks; in Zambia 49 new businesses were started as a sustainable means of livelihood as a result of micro-enterprise loans (one of the businesses raised the capacity of an organization to generate income to care for over 400 TB/HIV-AIDS patients by providing counselling drugs and food supplements); in Brazil 42 religious leaders who received training in encouraging early HIV diagnosis acted as multipliers by providing leadership in their churches to speak openly about HIV infection and promoting AIDS testing through educational activities; in Tanzania improved infrastructure in schools led to a 10% increase in student enrolment in five schools; in Zambia 500 new pupil spaces helped lead to the eradication of illiteracy; globally more than 1 600 people have trained in addressing the link between poverty and environmental issues; five comprehensive studies on poverty wealth and ecology were completed and published.
