Project Description
The purpose of this project is to provide institutional support to the the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute (SICI) of Canada. SICI is a bi-national organization that aims to strengthen relationships between the academic research government business and cultural communities in Canada and India. Its membership includes 27 universities and the Museum of Civilization within Canada and 34 member universities in India. It is co-financed by the Governments of Canada and India. SICI currently implements a number of activities including a Canadian studies program; an India studies program; an applied research program; a partnership development program; a library development program; and a Youth Internship program.
Expected Results
Increased capacity of Indian and Canadian universities to address poverty reduction in India through applied research and public engagement.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2012) include: (i) undertaking 43 studies on a wide range of topics relating to India including women’s rights and nutrition for example; and (ii) setting up six academic partnerships between Indian and Canadian universities that addressed such topics as cancer treatment sustainable chemistry procedures ecological conservation domestic violence and issues relating to children youth and women. These results contributed to increasing the knowledge and capacity of Indian and Canadian researchers professors and students.
