Project Description

Right To Play's program aims to improve the lives of children and youth in disadvantaged communities in West and Francophone Africa. The program is designed to use sport and play as tools to engage children and youth including young women and girls in areas of life-skills development (including leadership discipline tolerance and teamwork) disease prevention (such as malaria and HIV/AIDS) and institutional strengthening of civil society organizations.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of June 2013 include: (i) certified 4 560 coaches and teachers to facilitate Right To Play modules which use sport and play to engage children and youth; (ii) 214 778 children participated in weekly sport and play activities; (iii) 310 rehabilitated classrooms and play spaces and latrines allowed for safe child-friendly environments; and (iv)youth led over 449 initiatives to address important community issues like health awareness clean-up campaigns and child protection issues like child labour and child abuse. This increased youth leadership has allowed for empowered young people to spearhead change in their communities. As well girls’ empowerment in the classroom has reached new levels demonstrated by leadership roles held by young women in schools. These results are helping children and youth especially girls in all five countries to improve their life skills such as leadership cooperation and self-confidence and become healthier by learning to avoid illnesses such as malaria and diarrhea. Children and youth in participating communities are also increasingly motivated to attend school because of the improved learning and play environments. Finally 80% of partner organizations are now implementing sport for development programs independently of Right To Play.
