Project Description
The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Canada's program aims to nurture community-based initiatives for improving the quality of life in targeted communities in Asia and Africa. In order to achieve this goal ADRA Canada and its local partners are working in partnership with local communities and with those in need in view of meeting the self-determined needs of marginalized people. The program supports activities in target sectors such as primary health care basic education food security and economic development.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (January 2012) include: (i) the improvement of health and life practices of 580 children and 710 adults in Mongolia who received training in personal hygiene and disease prevention; (ii) the empowerment of youth from 48 villages in Laos who are making informed sexual choices following awareness-raising sessions radio broadcasts and community-wide events on this topic; (iii) the improvement of behavioural changes in relation to HIV/AIDS and other diseases in Togo where 8 060 people or 95% of beneficiaries use disease-prevention techniques; (iv) the improvement of access for people with disabilities in Kenya where 32 new public facilities are equipped with disability access; and (v) a contribution to reduce tobacco use in Cambodia that lead to the drafting of a National Tobacco Control Law. These have contributed to empower target groups or other beneficiaries such as local government on basic health issues in the target areas of the project.
