Project Description
This project aims to enhance Kwame Nkrumah University of Sciences and Technology (KNUST) capacity to address the root causes and outcomes of poor natural resource management. The University of Guelph gives a hand to KNUST to enhance livelihoods of resource-poor communities in Ghana. The project includes many activities such as the development and launching of an institutional strategic plan and the development of curriculum for a bachelor's of technology program. In addition Ghanaian professionals have access to training for men and women as agro-forestry technologists for entry-level careers in public and private sector agencies. Finally policies are developed in the country and are enhanced during the project.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project May 2014 include: (1) number of people practicing various agroforestry technologies have increased from 53.4% in 2007 to 155% in 2013; (2) a 92% increase in lands under cultivation; (3) poverty reduced in 854 households through agroforestry practices income generation activities value-addition of agriculture commodities and partnership with private agricultural entrepreneurs; (4) women’s participation in agroforestry activities has increased by 50% since 2006 bringing the total women participation to 82%; (5) an estimated 700 community school children are now engaged in agroforestry activities; (6) job creation increased by 50% through enhanced income-generating livelihood activities resulting in estimated 98% employed persons in the communities and (7) two Geographic Information System (GIS) centres and a soil and plant laboratory were established positioning KNUST as the Center of Excellence in West Africa. These have contributed to enhance livelihoods for resource-poor men women and youth in Ghana.
