Project Description
The main goal of this cost-shared program is to contribute to poverty reduction by increasing community capacity for self-determined sustainable development in selected countries through the following objectives: a) improve basic human needs through an integrated approach focusing on environmentally sustainable agriculture (e.g. addressing land degradation) assisting in fresh water supply basic education and primary health care; b) increase household income levels and foster gender equity through the promotion of entrepreneurship and job creation; and c) strengthen institutional capacity and community organizational capacity for self-directed community development with equal participation and representation of women.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved by end of the program include: In Bolivia 1 252 people in farming communities learned better ways to breed animals and were able to raise healthier animals after taking part in 76 workshops on animal husbandry; 2 204 people learned how to produce more crops by participating in 224 workshops on production harvest and post-harvest techniques; 150 families were able to start businesses and increase their household income after taking training on small business management and through loan schemes; 236 people adopted innovative and improved farming techniques on 67 plots increasing their crop production; and six producer organizations are better able to establish and maintain commercial relationships after attending 47 workshops on management and entrepreneurship. In India 1 027 people (673 men and 354 women) learned about and adopted more sustainable agricultural practices; 19 300 saplings were planted; 978 people became functionally literate; and 2 635 people (1 776 women and 859 men) adopted healthier hygiene practices. Also 800 women from 64 villages stopped using plastic bags and started using cloth bags; 745 families in 40 villages started using natural fertilizers in their kitchen gardens after undergoing training on the benefits of natural fertilizers the dangers of chemical fertilizers and pesticides and pollution control; 2 614 families started using water filters and 1 626 families from 200 villages started boiling their drinking water; 1 747 people (1 083 women and 664 men) started taking precautions to stop the spread of HIV; and 2 251 women increased their income by an average of Rs250 per day by starting 539 individual and group micro-entreprises in 154 villages. In Kenya 27 950 farmers learned about and adopted new agricultural technology to help them develop better farming skills; two Agricultural Resource and Technology Centres were strengthened to help protect the environment and improve agricultural production; 2
