Project Description
March 2013 - Ongoing inter-ethnic militia and cross-border conflicts in South Sudan continue to create significant displacement resulting in increased pressure on water and sanitation infrastructure as well as the health infrastructure throughout the country. With Canada's support CARE Canada will provide emergency healthcare water sanitation and hygiene to 75 500 returnees internally displaced persons and host communities in Rubkhona County Unity State South Sudan. Project activities will focus on: supporting three primary health centres through outpatient services; distributing essential drugs and supplies; providing training on health education and supervising home visits; establishing 20 new clean water points and rehabilitating 30 existing water points; constructing emergency latrines for newly displaced; and training 200 people on health and hygiene education.
Expected Results
Specific outputs include: provision of essential emergency primary health care in three health centres for 45 000 people as well as disease surveillance for potential outbreaks; distribution of emergency water and sanitation items for 3 000 households including jerry cans soap and hygiene kits; and construction of 100 emergency latrines and hand washing stations as well as rehabilitation of 30 existing water points. Expected Outcomes include: increased access to quality primary health care for vulnerable returnees internally displaced persons and host communities; and increased access to safe water and sanitation for 30 000 vulnerable internally displaced persons returnees and host communities. The expected intermediate outcome is reduced vulnerability of crisis-affected people especially women and children.
