Project Description

March 2013 - There are still an estimated 1.7 million people living in internally displaced persons camps in the Darfur region. Despite efforts by the local authorities to resettle internally displaced persons in their original rural areas security threats and lack of access to basic services remain deterrents to sustainable permanent returns. With Canada's support Development and Peace is addressing the emergency health and nutrition needs of approximately 206 200 internally displaced people in four camps as well as host communities in Central Darfur Sudan. Project activities will focus on: supporting four health facilities and three nutrition centres; providing supplemental emergency feeding to 18 480 children under five and 7 920 pregnant or lactating mothers; providing essential drugs and equipment including distributing long-lasting mosquito nets clean delivery kits and vaccinations; and providing training on malnutrition to community health workers specifically for midwives in camps and host communities.

Expected Results

Specific activities/outputs include: •equipping and supplying four health facilities and three nutrition centres to treat severe acute malnutrition in over 18 480 children under five and 7 920 pregnant and lactating women; •provision of essential primary healthcare and basic maternal newborn and child healthcare services as well as establishment of effective referral system; and •training provided to 27 community health workers to conduct screening and testing for malnutrition. The expected intermediate outcome is reduced vulnerability of crisis-affected people especially women and children.
