Project Description
March 2013 - Despite the recent positive political developments in Burma the humanitarian situation in many border areas of the country remains very difficult. Since June 2011 between 75 000-100 000 people have been displaced due to conflict between the Burmese military and the Kachin Independence Army and are living in makeshift camps in Kachin and Shan States. With Canada's support Hope International Development Agency is addressing the basic needs of approximately 18 700 conflict-affected internally displaced people in Kachin State. Project activities include: installing two water supply systems and 100 sanitary latrines in displacement camps; distributing 2 500 hygiene kits; providing training on appropriate hygiene; and distributing non-food items (such as raincoats warm clothing blankets and sleeping mats) to 3 800 displaced families.
Expected Results
Expected outputs include: installation of 100 latrines and two water supply systems; provision of hygiene kits and hygiene education to 2 500 people; 30 hygiene promoters actively promoting hygiene in displacement camps; and distribution of rain and cold-weather clothing and household supplies to displaced families. The expected intermediate outcome is the reduced vulnerability of crisis-affected people especially women and children.
