Project Description
March 2013 - Somalia remains a country in extreme crisis: an estimated 2.1 million people (or 25 percent of the population) require immediate humanitarian assistance and a further 1.7 million people remain on the brink of crisis with all reserves gone and vulnerable to the slightest shock. Widespread food insecurity acute malnutrition and displacement caused by both conflict and climatic events (drought flooding) all remain serious concerns. Malnutrition rates in many areas of the country remain above the 15 percent emergency threshold. More than 70 percent of the population is without reliable access to safe water. In addition more than one million Somalis remain displaced from their homes. With Canadian support World Vision Canada is helping to provide basic healthcare safe drinking water adequate sanitation facilities and knowledge of proper hygiene practices to an estimated 27 000 people affected by drought and conflict in Luuq district of Gedo Region in south-western Somalia.
Expected Results
Expected Results: Support to and operation of 4 mobile health clinics; establishment or rehabilitation of 5 water points (shallow wells with hand pumps); establishment of 150 community latrines with hand washing facilities and establishment and operation of two child friendly spaces (to promote child protection). Training will be provided to 4 nurses 4 auxillary nurses 4 midwives 4 birth attendants 4 nutrition assistants 4 vaccinators 4 community health outreach workers 8 child workers and five water community management committees. A total of 110 community training sessions will be conducted covering topics such as health hygiene and sanitation. The expected intermediate outcome is reduced vulnerability of crisis-affected people particularly women and children.
