Project Description
March 2013 - With Canada's support Doctors without Borders is working to reduce morbidity and mortality by providing emergency health and medical care to displaced and violence-affected communities in the Ituri and Bas-Uélé districts of Orientale Province Democratic Republic of Congo. Working in hospitals health centres and through mobile clinics Doctors without Borders is providing emergency medical services as well as strengthening epidemiological surveillance to improve the response capacity to outbreaks and medical emergencies.
Expected Results
Expected outputs include: provision of treatment for diseases including acute malnutrition and malaria; provision of antenatal and postnatal consultations; provision of treatment for serious medical issues in health centres and hospitals including obstetrics and surgical emergencies; reinforcement of epidemiological and humanitarian surveillance to mitigate the risk of medical emergencies; and provision of treatment for cases of war surgery and victims of sexual violence. The project is expected to improve health in conflict-affected regions of Oriental province with a cachement population of 439 000. The expected intermediate outcome is reduced vulnerability of crisis-affected people especially women and children.
