Project Description
January 2013 - The heavy rains and strong winds from Hurricane Sandy in late October 2012 battered Haiti for more than three days extracting a heavy humanitarian toll on the country with at least 1.6 million people affected. The departments in the south and western areas of the country were the most affected. Damage to homes the agriculture sector and public buildings and public facilities including potable water networks hospitals and schools was widespread. The food security situation also deteriorated with the passage of Hurricane Sandy. With Canada's support CARE Canada is providing live-saving assistance to an estimated 24 000 hurricane-affected people in the Grand'Anse department of Haiti. The allocation to CARE Canada ensures that critical humanitarian needs arising from the impact of Hurricane Sandy are being met through the provision of non-food relief items emergency shelter materials safe water and hygiene promotion to affected populations in Grand'Anse Haiti including female-headed households.
Expected Results
Expected outputs include: non-food relief items emergency shelter solutions and hygiene kits are provided to 2 000 hurricane-affected persons; access to clean water is provided to 24 000 hurricane-affected people; hygiene promotion activities are conducted for affected communities in Grand'Anse; and training on water and sanitation management is provided to local volunteers. The expected intermediate outcome is reduced vulnerability of crisis-affected people especially women and children.
