Project Description
The goal of this project is to help address the underlying causes of under-nutrition by identifying best practices and successful strategies for improving nutrition through development programming in other sectors. The project provides support for the United Nations Standing Committee on Nutrition to review and map all development programs initiatives and activities that integrate nutrition. This includes programs initiatives and activities undertaken by United Nations institutions academia donors and other stakeholders. By documenting what has been successful to date and identifying key nutrition indicators and outcomes the project aims to fill a gap in the global knowledge base on nutrition-sensitive development. Donors and developing countries can then use the improved knowledge base to make better nutrition policy and plan more effective nutrition programming across different sectors such as agriculture and food security public health and education.
Expected Results
The expected outputs for this project include: (i) background reviews for advancement of technical policy and programmatic guidance for countries; (ii) detailed documentation with descriptions of the current activities and initiatives of different United Nations agencies institutions and other stakeholders addressing nutrition-sensitive agriculture food security and humanitarian assistance; and (iii) a desk review on documented policy and programmatic experience of United Nations agencies and their partners with regards to nutrition-sensitive agriculture food security and humanitarian assistance with key lessons learned main challenges and opportunities. These outputs contribute to an increased inclusion of nutrition considerations in CIDA's policy and programming in the sectors of agriculture food security and humanitarian assistance and to enhanced dialogue and best practices relating to nutrition-sensitive programming and policy at the global level.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project include: •Annotated bibliography on nutrition impact of food systems •Template for mapping current activities and initiatives on nutrition-sensitive agriculture •Mapping of activities and initiatives on nutrition-sensitive agriculture which is a collection of 18 individual briefs from UN agencies international research institutes and donors. This report takes stock of ongoing programmes and research activities conducted by international organizations and institutions •Report entitled ‘Review of country level programming experience in nutrition-sensitive agriculture ’ including a summary of the existing evidence base. •Article based on the report ‘Review of country level programming experience in nutrition-sensitive agriculture’ for publication in edition number 40 of the UNSCN flagship publication SCN News which will focus on ‘changing food systems for better nutrition’.
