Project Description

This grant is Canada's institutional support to the International Trade Centre. The Centre acts as the focal point within the United Nations system for trade-related assistance to developing countries. Established in 1968 its mission is to help small enterprises in developing countries achieve success as exporters. The Centre develops and executives programs based on country needs and that contribute to sustainable and inclusive economic growth and poverty reduction. The Centre provides assistance by making policy environments friendlier for export business by strengthening the institutions that provide support to exporters and by assisting small export enterprises and communities to reach global markets with products and services. Its activities take into account crosscutting development issues such as gender equality sustainable development and poverty reduction.

Expected Results

The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: (i) improved availability and use of trade intelligence; (ii) strengthened trade support institutions and trade policies; (iii) increased enterprise competitiveness and export performance; and (iv) increased inclusiveness and sustainability into trade promotion and export development policies.

Progress & Results Achieved

ITC’s performance against corporate outcomes for 2012-2013 is as follows: Outcome goal of Strengthened integration of the business sector into the global economy through enhanced support to policy makers: •30 export development strategies were implemented (target was for 40) •65 country networks were established (target was for 98) •52 country identified that they had enriched negotiating positions (target was for 57) Outcome goal of Increased capacity of trade support institutions to support businesses: •139 trade support institutions improved their ranking (target was for 105) •109 policy proposals were completed by trade support institutions (target was for 89) Outcome goal of Strengthened international competitiveness of enterprises through ITC training and support: •1 169 enterprises were enabled to formulate business strategies (target was for 2 600) •4 142 enterprises were enabled to become export-ready (target was for 1 623) •1 608 enterprises met potential buyers and transacted business (target was for 1 506)
