Project Description
This grant represents Canada's long-term institutional support to the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF). AUF uses these funds along with other donor funding to achieve its mandate. AUF's mandate is to support cooperation and solidarity among academic institutions working in French especially in French-speaking countries in Africa the Arab World South East Asia Central and Eastern Europe and the Caribbean. Canada's support to AUF helps to develop higher education and research and train teachers and managers of educational institutions in these countries.
Expected Results
The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: (1) the capacities of teachers students researchers and professionals in developing countries are improved; (2) university management is strengthened through digital media and the training of executives and professors; (3) Francophone scientific information and research is shared on-line; (4) research on the environment and sustainable development is expanded and improved; and (5) opportunities for local training for students and young professionals are enhanced through a variety of open and distance courses at the undergraduate and graduate level.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (2013) include: (1) 4 253 individual training and research scholarships were awarded to students and researchers from La Francophonie; (2) 7 787 students were enrolled in 100 university francophone programs; (3) 2 160 learners were able to participate in 79 open and distance learning sessions; (4) 113 inter-university scientific cooperation projects were supported bringing together 316 associated institutions; (5) more than 14 530 people were trained in information and communications technologies through the network of 68 Francophone virtual campuses (and the website recorded 574 289 visits in 2013); and (6) more than 17 185 articles and theses are now available to Francophone students professors and researchers online.
