Project Description
August 2012 - CIDA's institutional support to the World Food Programme (WFP) contributes to meeting the food assistance needs of vulnerable populations thereby contributing to greater global food security. Specifically this funding helps WFP reach its objectives which are to: i) save lives and protect livelihoods in emergencies with a focus on internally displaced populations refugees and other vulnerable populations; ii) prevent acute hunger and invest in disaster preparedness and mitigation measures; iii) restore and rebuild lives and livelihoods in post-conflict post-disaster or transition situations; iv) reduce chronic hunger and under nutrition; and v) strengthen the capacities of countries to reduce hunger through handover strategies and local purchase. CIDA's support provides WFP with the flexibility to determine where food assistance needs are the greatest. The grant supports WFP's food assistance programming.
Expected Results
Expected outputs include: Through this project the World Food Programme (WFP) is able to respond swiftly to rapid-onset emergencies protracted crises and to reduce chronic hunger and under nutrition. Outputs of WFP operations will include: providing food assistance through designated distribution sites (e.g. refugee camps therapeutic feeding centres); providing supplementary feeding to vulnerable groups including children and female-headed households; and undertaking local and regional purchase of food where possible. Expected intermediate outcomes include: This project will contribute to saving lives and protecting livelihoods in emergencies; preventing acute hunger and investing in disaster preparedness and mitigation measures; restoring and rebuilding lives and livelihoods in post-conflict post-disaster or transition situations; and strengthening the capacities of countries to reduce hunger through handover strategies and the local purchase of food.
