Project Description
With CIDA’s support Save the Children Canada is providing life-saving integrated food and nutrition programming for children and for pregnant and lactating women affected by the food and nutrition crisis in the Centre Nord region of Burkina Faso. The project also aims to support vulnerable households with high malnutrition rates through monitoring nutritional status nutrition and health information sessions and cash transfers until at least the main harvest in autumn 2012. The project activities include: support for nutrition screening in communities of more than 75 000 children and 46 000 pregnant and lactating women; the referral as appropriate to health facilities for the treatment of malnutrition; support for the treatment of 49 000 children with moderate acute malnutrition; and cash transfers to 132 households affected by malnutrition (approximately 35 660 beneficiaries) to reinforce the ability of these vulnerable families to procure food.
Expected Results
The expected outputs for this project include: the health and nutrition status of children under five years of age and of pregnant and lactating women is improved; food security in vulnerable households is improved; and the use of negative coping mechanisms is reduced. The expected intermediate outcome is reduced vulnerability of crisis-affected people especially women and children.
