Project Description

This grant represents Canada's institutional support to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). UNDP uses these funds along with other donors' funding to achieve its mandate. UNDP has a dual mandate within the UN family: 1) UNDP works to advance human development through the provision of policy and technical assistance to program countries to achieve poverty reduction; and 2) UNDP plays a lead role in UN reform efforts coordinating UN institutions at the country level as manager of the Resident Coordinator system and Chair of the UN Development Group. Canada's support to UNDP contributes to the delivery of UNDP's overarching mission to help countries build their own national capacity to achieve sustainable human development.

Expected Results

The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: strengthened achievement of inclusive growth and employment democratic governance crisis prevention and recovery and environment and energy management in partner countries; greater coherence of UN system-wide policy and programs at the country level; and improved effectiveness and efficiency of UNDP programming.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved from 2008 to 2012 include: (1) helping 44 countries generate action plans partnerships and resources to accelerate achievement on lagging Millennium Development Goals; (2) supporting initiatives that have increased food security for 15.3 million people and jobs and livelihoods for 4.7 million people including 2 million in 15 crisis-affected countries; (3) improving access to energy for over 3.5 million rural women thereby increasing their incomes by mechanizing productive tasks and reducing time spent on chores; (4) helping 48 countries strengthen legal and administrative frameworks and policies to generate employment and prioritize the inclusion of marginalized groups in social protection and social safety mechanisms; (5) helping 95 countries improve the delivery of public services and improving the abilities of over 60 parliaments and 70 human rights institutions to undertake their work effectively; (6) helping over 60 countries with electoral cycle management and ensuring the participation of 17.3 million under-represented and marginalized people in elections and constitutional processes; (7) supporting 25 conflict- and disaster-affected countries with the rehabilitation of socioeconomic infrastructure benefitting 3.1 million people; and (8) helping 70 countries ensure that their disaster management plans and strategies include measures to reduce future risks.
