Project Description
With CIDA support Oxfam Canada is helping to address the emergency water and sanitation needs of the growing population of internally displaced persons residing in the Afgooye Corridor and the suburbs of Mogadishu as a result of the ongoing conflict in Somalia. Specific activities include: the establishment improvement extension or rehabilitation of water distribution systems (boreholes pipelines storage facilities and distribution points) in the targeted internally displaced persons (IDP) camps; the establishment or rehabilitation of 1 350 pit latrines; the training of water and environmental sanitation committees; and the distribution of child-friendly health and hygiene promotion materials.
Expected Results
Expected Results Include: 195 000 IDPs living in the Ceelasha and Xawa Cabdi camps in the Afgooye Corridor have improved access to adequate supplies of safe water and proper sanitation facilities; 181 000 IDPs living in IDP settlements in Mogadishu have improved access to adequate supplies of safe water and proper sanitation facilities; and local knowledge is improved regarding proper health and hygiene practices to help prevent the spread of communicable diseases amongst already vulnerable populations. The expected intermediate outcome is reduced vulnerability of crisis-affected people especially women and children.
