Project Description
With CIDA support the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is working to protect and assist refugees internally displaced persons and those who are stateless while searching for lasting solutions to their plight. These funds will contribute to operations in the following regions: Central Africa Southern Africa West Africa Asia-Pacific Latin America and the Middle East and North Africa. Main activities include: providing shelter clothing and other essential non-food items to people of concern; providing adequate sanitation services; working with governments to register asylum seekers and refugees and to help issue identity documents; working to uphold the social and economic standing of persons of concern; and working with governments to support refugee self-reliance and forge peaceful relations between refugees and local citizens.
Expected Results
The expected immediate outcomes for this project include: (1) national law and policy relating to refugees and internally displaced persons are improved; (2) out-of-school adolescents participate in formal and non-formal education programmes; (3) mortality levels of children under five years old living in camps or settlements are maintained or reduced; (4) quality of shelter for refugees and internally displaced are improved; and (5) support is provided to refugees wishing to return home voluntarily. The expected intermediate outcome is reduced vulnerability of crisis-affected displaced people in particular women and children.
