Project Description
This grant is for the World Food Programme (WFP)’s Nutrition Strengthening Plan to increase the use of nutritionally enhanced foods to meet the specific nutrition needs of vulnerable population groups. With Canada's support the World Food Programme aims to increase its capacity to research develop and roll-out specialized food products and target them to meet the specific needs of vulnerable population groups focusing on young children pregnant and lactating women and adolescent girls in order to reduce mortality improve health nutritional status and long-life productivity.
Expected Results
Expected outputs include: Nutrition situation analysis conducted in selected countries and lessons learned documented and disseminated; scientific evidence best practices and recommendations for the use of innovative specialized food supplements for the treatment of moderate acute malnutrition and prevention of undernutrition are drafted and disseminated; a tool box on how to support local products and markets is expanded and improved especially for development of new foods; supply chain analyses are conducted and links made with WFP’s Forward Purchase Facility; long-term partnerships with research institutes and private sector are developed to research and design new food products. The expected intermediate outcome is reduced vulnerability of crisis-affected people especially women and children.
