Project Description

The goal of this project is to help improve the health of women and men in developing countries by helping to make health services equally available and effective for both men and women. It supports the Gender Equity and Human Rights Unit within the World Health Organization (WHO). The mandate of this unit is to reinforce the ability of WHO to address issues relating to gender differences in its programs. This project supports the WHO in developing the knowledge and skills its staff requires to make gender equity and human rights considerations an integral part of all WHO policies and programs. The project helps to ensure that these cross-cutting priorities are effectively addressed at the national and regional levels.

Expected Results

The expected results for this project include: improved capacity of the World Health Organization (WHO) its regional offices and its member states to develop national health plans that integrate cross-cutting priorities; increased awareness across WHO of gender issues equity and human rights; and improved platform of sex disagregated data.

Progress & Results Achieved

The project reinforced the capacity of the World Health Organization to improve the integration of gender in its programming through a multi-pronged approach that included: supporting a strong central capacity to mainstream cross-cutting priorities of gender equity and rights and ensure effective implementation through all levels of the organization; ensuring a high profile for gender at the governing bodies meetings; and establishing a small constituency of like-minded donors to track progress and build support for this issue.
