Project Description

This contribution represents Canada’s institutional support to the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer (MFMP). The Multilateral Fund uses these funds along with other donors’ funding to achieve its mandate. The Multilateral Fund provides support to developing countries to help phase out the use and production of substances that break down the earth's protective ozone layer. The destruction of the ozone layer allows increased ultraviolet radiation to reach the earth. This is detrimental to human health and diminishes the productivity of important food crops. The Multilateral Fund promotes technological change in developing countries by helping to increase the use of environmentally safe products and equipment through technical assistance the conversion of industrial facilities and strengthening key organizations. The Multilateral Fund secretariat is based in Montreal.

Expected Results

The expected intermediate outcome for this project is reduced consumption and production of ozone-depleting substances by developing countries in accordance with their obligations under the Montreal Protocol.

Progress & Results Achieved

The key result achieved as of December 2014 by the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol with the support of the Government of Canada and other international donors is the phasing out of 481 653 tonnes of ozone-depleting potential in 144 countries. According to the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environment Programme atmospheric levels of key ozone-depleting substances are going down. Assuming continued compliance with the Montreal Protocol the ozone layer outside the Polar Regions is expected to recover to its pre-1980 levels before 2050.
