Project Description

The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR)-Canada Linkage Fund (CCLF) is a competitive grants program established by CIDA in 1995. The CCLF enables CGIAR centres to work closely with national research institutions extension services and non-governmental organizations from developing countries. It broadens collaboration with research organizations in Canada providing access to Canadian technologies and specialized expertise which are adapted to local conditions in developing countries. In turn Canadian partners gain insight into the food systems of developing countries.

Expected Results

The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: new and strengthened partnerships between CGIAR Centres and Canadian researchers for international agricultural research.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of September 2012 include: (1) over 15 universities throughout Canada have strengthened partnerships with CGIAR Centres for food security and nutrition initiatives; (2) the International Water Management Institute in partnership with the University of British Columbia has improved the livelihoods and increased the resiliency of communities in Nepal and the Himalayan region that are vulnerable to climate change risks; and (3) the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture has helped to expand soybean production in sub-Saharan Africa with total production of soybean at two million tons.
