Project Description
This grant represents Canada’s institutional support to the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). The CGIAR uses these funds along with other donor funding to achieve its mandate. CGIAR’s mandate is to reduce poverty and hunger improve human health and nutrition and enhance ecological resilience through high-quality international agriculture research partnership and leadership. Canada’s support to the CGIAR contributes to greater food security and improvements in human health and nutrition.
Expected Results
The intermediate expected results for this project include: reduced rural poverty for small-scale farmers through better access to markets; improved food security and nutrition for the poor and undernourished in developing countries; and more sustainable management of natural resources for food production.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of May 2013 include: (1) the creation of the CGIAR Research Program on Maize in Nepal providing greater access to improved seed extension services and other knowledge; (2) Pigeon-pea farmers in Odisha India are improving their livelihoods with increased income and yield of 90% and 70% respectively by growing improved seed varieties; (3) dissemination of a new early-maturing pearl millet variety offering nearly a 30% yield advantage over current crops in Nigeria; and (4) improved chickpea consumption in Sudan strengthening food security.
