Project Description
This grant represents Canada’s institutional support to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). UNFPA uses these funds along with those of other donors to achieve its core mandate and functions. UNFPA’s mandate is to support countries in using population data for policies and programmes that reduce poverty and ensure that every pregnancy is wanted every birth is safe every young person is free of HIV and every girl and woman is treated with dignity and respect. UNFPA focuses on three main areas: reproductive health and rights gender equality and population and development strategies. Canada’s support to UNFPA contributes to greater access to reproductive health development policies that take population dynamics into account and improvements in the status of girls and women worldwide.
Expected Results
The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: increased incorporation by developing country governments of population and development issues in health policies and plans; greater utilization by women and young people of quality health services and sexual and reproductive services; and the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS.
Progress & Results Achieved
Through the support of Canada and other international donors in 2012 UNFPA: implemented 70 lifesaving programmes in 39 countries affected by hummanitarian emergencies and disasters; supported 119 countries in their efforts to implement international agreements and national legislation for gender equality and reproductive rights; helped 54 countries integrate sexual and reproductive health services including family planning into national health policies and plans; worked with 41 Sub-Saharan African countries to develop policies and programmes to address gender-based violence and female genital mutilation/cutting; helped 33 countries strengthen their midwifery workforce; worked in 86 countries to reduce HIV risk and vulnerability among key populations; supported the Ministries of Education in 38 countries to develop age-appropriate comprehensive sexuality education; helped 73 countries factor in population trends in the development of their national development plans; and strengthened 103 countries' capacity to gather analyze and share data as part of a census or other major survey.
