Project Description

This contribution is Canada’s support to the 12th replenishment of the African Development Fund which is managed by the African Development Bank. Through this Fund the Bank provides concessionary financing – grants and low-interest loans – to the poorest and most vulnerable African countries. The Fund’s strategic priorities for this replenishment are: i) infrastructure development; ii) governance; iii) regional integration; and iv) support to fragile states. The Fund pays particular attention to private sector development mainstreaming climate change adaptation and mitigation measures and promoting food security and agricultural productivity. The African Development Bank helps reduce poverty improve living conditions and mobilize resources for the sustainable economic and social development of its 53 African-country members. It promotes cooperation (including regional and sub-regional cooperation) and international trade particularly among its African-member states.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved for the period from January 2011 to December 2013 include: (1) helping to create over 1 million jobs including 254 000 jobs for women; (2) building rehabilitating or maintaining 8 192 km of roads to connect people and countries giving more than 26 million people better access to transport; (3) expanding energy generation capacity by 978 megawatts and providing 9.7 million people with new or improved electricity connections; (4) training over 55 000 teachers and building or rehabilitating over 2 500 classrooms providing 2.7 million people with better access to education; (5) investing in 971 health facilities and training over 14 000 health workers resulting in 28.6 million people having better access to quality health services; (6) improving water management on over 52 000 hectares of land and land use management on 809 000 hectares; and (7) providing 8.2 million people with improved access to water and sanitation. These results reflect the entire operations of the African Development Bank Group and have contributed to improved access to infrastructure regional economic integration and private sector development in Africa.
