Project Description
2011-01-25; Starting late December 2010 Sri Lanka experienced torrential rains causing severe flooding and landslides in the Eastern and Central regions of the country leading to 43 deaths and affecting 1 060 273 people. At the height of the disaster around the 13th and 14th of January over 320 000 persons were displaced in temporary emergency shelters in the worst-affected areas. The disaster further resulted in approximately 6 000 destroyed and 23 000 damaged homes. CIDA support aims to assist World Vision Canada to meet the basic human needs of flood-affected families through enabling access to clean water and providing safe sanitation services. Additionally World Vision Canada delivers child protection activities to help in re-establishing the psychological and emotional well-being of flood-affected children.
