Project Description
18 March 2011 - Since October 2008 over three million civilians have been forced to flee their homes due to armed conflict between the Pakistani military and militant groups in the northwest of the country. The majority of displaced people have returned to their home areas but approximately one million people are still displaced and are living in camps or with host families. Conflict and displacement continue in parts of the northwest and both returnees and internally displaced people (IDPs) require ongoing humanitarian assistance to meet their basic needs. CIDA's contribution is supporting Handicap International Canada to meet the basic needs of 7 000 vulnerable individuals particularly people with long-term physical or intellectual disabilities people with injuries or chronic diseases and the elderly. Project activities include: the deployment of three mobile medical clinics; the construction of accessible latrines; the provision of hygiene kits and hygiene training; the provision of urgently needed non-food relief items (clothing blankets and cooking sets) and mobility aids; and ongoing protection monitoring and assistance.
